Serial Keypad Installation and Setup
Use these instructions to properly install a Serial Numeric Keypad.
Your Serial Keypad should have a cable and a 9 pin connector on the end. If it does NOT have this type of connector, it is NOT a serial key pad and this document does NOT apply.
WHY USE A SERIAL KEYPAD INSTEAD OF A USB KEYPAD?
With a Serial Keypad the Sign In screen can be moved or positioned on a second monitor or even minimized while you do other things on the Main monitor and members can sign in without interrupting what is happening on the main monitor. THIS CANNOT BE DONE WITH A USB KEYPAD... A USB KEYPAD MUST HAVE FOCUS (BE THE ACTIVE WINDOW) WHEN MEMBERS ARE SIGNING IN.
WARNING: DO NOT INSTALL ANY SOFTWARE THAT MAY HAVE COME WITH YOUR SERIAL KEYPAD. If you already installed this software, it should be removed through Windows Control Panel, Add/Remove Program and then restart the computer restarted.
Our system ONLY supports the Scorpius, Genovation905 keypads. In the System Control; Sign In tab; Select either the Scorpius or Genovation905 keypad. If you have an ALPS keypad; select the Genovation keypad type.
You may purchase a Scorpius Serial Keypad from one of the following web sites.
www.ergogeek.com Look for “iOne Scorpius 22 RB serial)
www.jameco.com ; Look for ("Scorpius 22" )
Installation:
Plug the 9 pin connector into the Serial Port on the back of your computer. If you do not have a Serial Port, see the section called “Adding a Serial Port to your computer” in this document.
Start up the Ease-E-Club software and select the Reports and Tables option; then the Tables option; then System Control option; Select the Sign In Tab and select a COM port in the Serial Scanner/keypad section. Usually this is going to be “COM1”.
If you do not know the COM port number you can find this by:
For Windows XP:
Right-Click on “My Computer”; Select Properties; Select Hardware Tab; Press Device Manager button; scroll down to Ports (Com & LPT); Left click on Ports. After the words “Communications Port” will be the “COM1”, “COM4”, etc. Note the Com Port number. This is your to enter in our System Control file; SignIn Cntrl Tab; Com Port 1 field.
For VISTA/Windows 7:
You can find the COM port by clicking on the Start Button; Control Panel, Classic View; Device Manager; Ports(COM & LPT). You will see “Communications Port COM1”, etc. This is your serial COM port to enter in our System Control file; SignIn Cntrl Tab; Com Port 1 field.
Select the type of keypad from the drop down list.
Close the Ease-E-Club software.
ReStart your computer.
To test the operation, start up the Ease-E-Club software and select the “Sign In” option. When the Sign In screen appears, enter a client number on the keypad. If the code is not set up the system will display an “Invalid client” alert. If nothing happens see the “Trouble Shooting” section of the Serial Scanner help file.
Adding a Serial Port to your computer:
If your computer does NOT have a Serial Port connector on the back you have 3 choices:
Buy a “USB to Serial Converter” This device plugs into any free USB port and creates a new COM PORT within windows. Usually it creates “COM4”. You can obtain one of these converters from your hardware supplier or from us. IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS 7/10 MAKE SURE THE USB TO SERIAL ADAPTOR IS WINDOWS 7/10 COMPATIBLE.
Have your computer supplier add a Serial Card to your computer and install the proper drivers and test that it is working.
Buy a new computer with a serial port already installed.
